Zelenskyy Concludes Drone Deals with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Thursday that Kyiv has concluded a trio of major security agreements with three Gulf nations, positioning the pacts as a strategic push to counter Russia's drone arsenal at a fraction of current interception costs.

Zelenskyy confirmed the signings via Telegram, framing the accords as a unified "Drone Deal" spanning Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. "We have signed three major security documents with the countries of the Middle East -- the Drone Deal with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. They will be implemented through a number of different contracts with both the private and public sectors of Ukraine," he said.

Central to the agreements is the development of affordable unmanned aerial systems and shared manufacturing infrastructure. According to Zelenskyy, one of the features of the deal is "low-cost drones and co-production lines for their production."

The Ukrainian president made a pointed economic argument for the initiative, drawing a stark contrast between the cost of Russian-deployed Shahed drones — Iranian-made unmanned combat aerial vehicles — and Ukraine's proposed countermeasures. "Shahed drone can cost from 80,000 to 130,000 dollars. It will be destroyed not with the help of a missile worth 3-4 million dollars, but with the help of an interceptor worth 10 thousand dollars. We want to help them defend themselves. And we will continue to build such partnerships with other countries," he said.

Zelenskyy also signaled ambitions to extend the drone cooperation model further, expressing a desire to share Ukraine's battlefield expertise in drone production with the United States.

On the diplomatic front, the Ukrainian leader reiterated his demand for the deployment of international forces along the contact line with Russia as a prerequisite for any credible settlement to the conflict.

Addressing the ceasefire agreement in the Middle East, Zelenskyy said Ukraine backs the truce but voiced apprehension that Moscow could exploit the relative calm to its own strategic advantage.
