Pakistan, Qatar Call for Peace as Mideast Tensions Escalate

(MENAFN) Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a phone call Wednesday with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as escalating Middle East hostilities continue to claim lives and destabilize the broader region.

Both leaders converged on the "urgent need for advancing peace efforts, encourage de-escalation, and promote dialogue to restore regional peace and stability," Sharif posted on X, the US-owned social media platform.

During the exchange, Sharif "reiterated Pakistan's strong condemnation of the recent attacks against Qatar and other Gulf countries, extended heartfelt condolences over the loss of precious lives, and reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering solidarity and support to Qatar in these challenging times."

A formal statement issued by Sharif's office confirmed he pledged Islamabad's "full solidarity and support with the brotherly people of Qatar, especially at this challenging time," while voicing deep alarm over the region's worsening security landscape. Sharif underscored that Pakistan has consistently called on all parties to step back from confrontation and pursue resolution through diplomatic channels.

In response, Sheikh Tamim "appreciated Pakistan's sincere diplomatic efforts for regional peace," the statement noted.

In a separate development, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim endorsed Pakistan's "timely and constructive" proposal to serve as a neutral venue for US-Iran negotiations. Ibrahim commended Sharif and fellow leaders of "friendly" nations for their willingness to intervene during a moment of "acute regional danger." He also upheld Iran's "right to defend its sovereignty" under international law, "particularly in the face of continued Israeli strikes in the country and in Lebanon."

The diplomatic flurry comes as the region remains engulfed in conflict following a US-Israeli offensive launched against Iran on Feb. 28 — a campaign that has since claimed 1,340 lives, among them then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran has unleashed waves of drone and missile strikes on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states housing US military installations, inflicting casualties, battering infrastructure, and sending shockwaves through global markets and international aviation networks.
