Flash Floods Leave Five Dead, Destroy 94 Homes in Afghanistan
The rapid-onset disaster has carved a trail of destruction through both southern and eastern regions of the country, damaging or demolishing at least 94 homes. The worst-affected areas span the southern provinces of Helmand, Kandahar, and Zabul, as well as the eastern provinces of Paktia and Parwan.
In Helmand's Washir district, the flooding dealt an additional blow to critical infrastructure — a newly constructed dam sustained significant damage as surging water levels overwhelmed the structure, the agency reported.
With seasonal rains intensifying, authorities have issued urgent warnings to residents, urging them to avoid building homes in riverbeds and flood-prone areas, citing the sharply elevated risk the current weather patterns pose to vulnerable communities.
