Pakistan, Afghanistan Announce 48-Hour Ceasefire
(MENAFN) Pakistan on Wednesday announced a 48-hour ceasefire with Afghanistan following intense cross-border clashes, saying the truce came into effect at 6 p.m. local time (1300 GMT).
According to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, the agreement was reached "at the request of the interim Afghan government." There has been no immediate response or confirmation from Kabul regarding the ceasefire.
The ministry emphasized that both nations would "sincerely" seek a diplomatic path forward, describing the ongoing tensions as a "complicated but resolvable" matter. Negotiations are expected to continue in hopes of preventing further escalation.
The truce follows a new outbreak of hostilities that erupted late Tuesday, despite a short-lived ceasefire on Saturday night. Over the weekend, fierce fighting between the two neighbors resulted in dozens of fatalities among both military personnel and civilians, marking the most severe confrontation since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021.
